Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth and production of a garlic clone subjected to either infection or virus-free conditions, according to bulb and clove size classification. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Treatments consisted of either virus-infected or virus-free cloves, obtained from bulbs of four size classes and from cloves with three sieve diameters. Vegetative characteristics and plant production were assessed. Plants infected by viral complexes showed a reduction in emergence (8.4%), plant height (9.8%), and production of marketable bulbs (39.4%), as well as a lower average mass of bulbs and cloves. The virus-free clone produced more bulbs in classes 5 (42-47...

Attributes of irrigated rice and soil solution as affected by salinity levels of the water layer Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Fraga,Thiago Isquierdo; Carmona,Felipe de Campos; Anghinoni,Ibanor; Marcolin,Elio.
In the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, flooded rice fields using Patos Lagoon as the source of water for irrigation are subject to be damaged by salinity, since this source is bound to the sea on its southern end. The sensitivity of rice is variable during plant development, being higher in the seedling and reproductive periods. However, there is not enough information about the behavior of plants under salt stress during the course of its development, especially in the vegetative stage. This study evaluated the effect of different levels of salinity of irrigation water on the salinity of soil solution over time and on some plant attributes, during the vegetative stage of rice. The study was conducted in a greenhouse, where seeds of the variety IRGA...

Pruning effects on vegetative growth and fruit quality of 'Bing'/'Gisela®5' and 'Bing'/'Gisela®6' sweet cherry trees (Prunus avium) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Villasante,Macarena; Godoy,Soledad; Zoffoli,Juan Pablo; Ayala,Marlene.
Annual pruning is one of the most efficient ways to regulate crop load and renew fruiting wood in highly productive sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) combinations. Although Chilean growers did not previously prune cherry trees of more vigorous combinations, in recent years, the adoption of more dwarfing rootstocks and self-fertile cultivars has led to the inclusion of annual pruning as a practice in modern orchards. At first, this alteration in orchard management practices was not considered by growers, and thus, many of the initially established cherry orchards were not pruned as intensively as they should have been. As a consequence, many trees showed a reduction in fruit quality after 4 or 5 years of being planted, as they became overcropped and,...

Quantitative changes in the biochemical composition of lignocellulosic residues during the vegetative growth of Lentinula edodes BJM
Gaitán-Hernández,Rigoberto; Esqueda,Martín; Gutiérrez,Aldo; Beltrán-García,Miguel.
The chemical changes in barley-straw (BS), wheat-straw (WS) and vineyard-pruning (VP) substrates were determined during colonization of Lentinula edodes mycelia (during primordium development) in solid state fermentation. Primordia appeared 39-50 days after inoculation. VP appeared to promote early sporophore initiation. The concentration of hemicellulose in BS and VP decreased gradually from 25.5% to 15.6% and from 15.8% to 12.3%, respectively. However in WS, hemicellulose decreased from 27.2% to 9.5%. Lignin broke down continuously in BS and WS, with 31.8% and 34.4% degradation, respectively; higher than that of cellulose. During the pinning stage, the C:N ratio decreased in VP and BS, but not in WS. On all substrates the phenols decreased notably...
